Storms of Life

Storms of Life

Is this the only image you see when trials come into your life? All seems to have lost color, beauty. All you can see is the clouds of hurt, bitterness rising up against the spreading cloud bank of darkness, which meets the skyline to overtake the only shadow of horizon. We no longer see the hope promised by God. We have bolted our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s leading and our eyes are visionless.

My family, friends and I just recently returned from Haiti where we met a new community who love God and hope to establish a church in the future. We also visited our dear friend, Pastor Marcel, who struggled personally with the recent outbreak of Chikungunya. Pastor Marcel once started in this bleak place with the ministry that was left in his hands when the missionaries departed Haiti. Yet Pastor Marcel made the choice to keep his vow to his Lord of serving his country with God’s help. Pastor has seen the ministry grow under the direction of God from one church to churches in many communities surrounding the St. Marc and mountainous area.

We who are in this desolate state can make the same wise choice as Pastor Marcel did. Let’s opt to make a learned choice and become an overcomer, trusting in our Lord and His promises. I John 5:4-5 says “For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” Learn more about God and His character as the Lord carries you through the trial(s) and restoring the beauty of Him who loves you dearly.

He also tells us in James 1:2-4 – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Come to Haiti and see the beauty God is growing in this small country.

What will it be like to be in the presence of the Holy of Holies? Will the beauty of Heaven even register? Someday we will know. I believe when we are in fellowship and are worshiping with other believers we are as close as we can get here on earth, we had that opportunity in Haiti. Thursday evening we arrived at the church in Sylvan to greetings from members of the congregation and Pastor Rosemond(above).

The church was cinder block and concrete with a tin roof. There was no air conditioning, fans, or even electricity.

We walked into the sanctuary. As visiting guests were guided to the front. The seating was a menagerie of cinder blocks and planks as well as chairs that members brought from home. The worship leader stood at the front and led the congregation in worship from a hymnal. The congregation sang beautifully from memory (most can’t read). The service continued as night settled in. Jim gave a message using an old table as a pulpit and a kerosene lamp for light. Moise a young pastor who traveled with us translated. At the end the church congregation sang a few more worship songs some of which we could recognize the tune. I was sure God was in this place and the surroundings didn’t matter.
